Through the suggestion of Mark
Stefani of VisionMusic
and reinforced by Mark Levine in his book The
Jazz Theory Book, I began to transcribe
in 1998. I decided to tackle some Grant Green first, and then
went on to explore Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, and
others. Although future projects of my own will certainly include
many more of the above artists (plus a few non-guitarists), I
am currently focusing primarily on tunes listed at Vision Musics
Jam
Central Station. Transcriptions are
always more useful and more fun to learn when you can practice
them in context, and Marks well-written MIDI jam tunes provide
a great way to do so. The nice thing about the tunes at Jam Central
Station, is that they can be downloaded and altered using notation
programs like Encore, Finale, and Sibelius (among others) allowing
you to change the key and tempo. When needed, I am also constructing my own
series of jam-MIDI's to accompany the tunes which are not supported
at Jam Central Station, though they are not "sculpted"
in the way that JCS tunes are. In any case, my personal jam-MIDI's
are also downloadable and alterable. :-)
Anyway...feel free to explore the up-to-date
index of the work I and others
(see below) have been engaged in recently. I try to include the
MIDI files of each transcription so that the music can be learned
by ear, if need be, but some contributions come sans MIDIs. If
you have trouble with the MIDI, and require a plug-in, you can
download one here. For
more information concerning the process
of transcribing visit Vison Music's Coaches
Corner.
Take note
of the links titled "buy CD"
and "info". The
"buy CD" links will
take you to an Amazon.com
or a Yahoo Shopping page where
you can buy the compact disk from which the tune is transcribed.
I highly suggest that you
invest in the recordings when learning a new tune. Not only can
you learn the tunes easier by having the recorded version on hand,
but you can also help support this site
by ordering through the links. The "info"
links will take you to the All Music
Guide entry for that particular album where you can
learn more about the artist, the songlist, and other cool facts.
If you experience any dead links please
let me know, sometimes my web software
does strange things. Thanks and enjoy!
